Inquiry
As part of our
Where We Are in Place and Time unit, this week we explored different art forms from around the world. We began by discussing and sharing about the many places we have visited both in Japan and internationally. We discussed the similarities and differences between other countries and Japan.
|
Miou shared some photos from her trips to Hokkaido, Oita,
Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Australia, Germany and Hawaii!
|
With our passports in hand, we hopped on a plane and traveled the world.
We watched videos of different dances that take place all over the world. We danced the Hula from Hawaii, a Native American Pow Wow, Irish Jig and Sendai Sparrow Dance.
We also created art based upon different art elements of various countries. We had some fun with pottery and made our own version of Mexican pinch pots. The bright colors and beautiful patterns of traditional Mexican pottery inspired our designs.

Take a look at our colorful versions of traditional metal working. We created Mexican folk art,
hojalata (tin folk art).
While in Kenya we learned about the Maasai tribe and made collar necklaces.
On our trip to Vietnam we learned the importance of the dragon symbol. Stone sculptures of dragons can be found all throughout Vietnam. We made Vietnamese dragon puppets.
In France we created beautiful stained glass artwork similar to the stained glass windows of Notre Dame de Paris.

What's Happening Next Week?
We are slowly approaching the end
of the second term. For the next two weeks we will be consolidating and reviewing
all that we have learned over the course of this trimester. The children will
spend time working in literacy and math learning centers, where they
can review material through various activities independently and in small
groups. We will continue our Inquiry lessons with a focus on Celebrations from Around the World. We will also have an international cooking activity next week. Details will follow in a separate email. Have a wonderful weekend!

Dec. 21: End of Fall Term and Holiday Celebration
Notes From the Teacher
On Wednesday, December 21st we will have a small end-of-term and holiday celebration. If your child would like to bring something to give to his/her friends (such as holiday cards, a small gift or treat, etc.) please feel free to send it to school on the last day. We kindly ask you to make sure that there are enough items for all the students in the class. This is completely optional, so please do not feel obligated to provide something.
